I'm working on a design that calls for the liberal use of weathered limestone (a small sample pic is below). I'm looking for a very natural look to the landscape, and would like to see some spillage of growth over some of these stones.
What kinds of plants would work well in that regard, keeping in mind my Zone 4 location?

Is this a sunny or shady spot? How tall of plantings are you looking for? There are several low ground covers that would look natural, and then there are low shrubs and taller weepy ones.
For starters, potentilla, sedums, bearberry, and itea are free flowing possiblities. I think the low junipers may be a little stiff for the natural look but a weeping Norway spruce might be fantastic if you can use the height.

Thanks Lanelle!
It's primarily the west side of the property, where the face of the stones will be facing West also. It's far enough away from structures that a large portion of the area will get some sun all day long. And truthfully, I'm looking for low growing as well as a little bit of height. The client is not wild about potentilla (though a funny story - I meet with the two of them, she says, I like that one with the yellow flowers - what's that? Potentilla. I smile and look at the husband, knowing in a previous conversation he said 'No matter what, no potentilla').
The Itea looks nice - though I don't think I'm going to be able to find that around here.... :(
What kinds of grasses would you put in a plan like this?

Isn't the bearberry mentioned earlier "Kinnickinnick"?
If so, that's what I pictured. It looks good all year long, with flowers in spring and berries in winter.
Lithospermum gets ragettity after a while - the plant with small blue flowers.
(Hey, how about some root-hormoned cuttings off your Corkscrew Hazel - lol)
Sedum is what came to mind when I read your post, although I later saw you mentioned some height is desired.

how bout a weeping japanese larch........larix decidua pendula
or, maybe scotch broom.....cytisis x scoparius
i like the idea of some intense color to popout in front of that white stone.
maybe some variegated red twig dog woods would look nice, especially with the red stem in the front of the rock in the winter
