OK, here's the situation; I was able to acquire (for free) a fairly large volume of pavers which were being "retired" by the town after being installed for about a year and a half. Most are in fantastic shape, but some, although perfect on the face, have chips out of the underside. Assuming that I test them for basic stability (no "wobblers" allowed) are there any issues associated with having a partial "hole" in the bottom? The only thing I can think of is to wet some sand, "fill" the chip and place on the sand as normal. Any problems here? thanks in advance for your feedback!

How deep are the chips, and what are you doing with the pavers? I.E. how much load is going to be on top of them? If they are shallow or small chips, since you got them free you have the luxury of tossing the bad ones out and only using the good ones. If you have deep chips and you are going to run cars over them, that's not a good idea. For patios/walks, just screed the sand the way you normally would and lay them down. Compact them when you are done and you should be set.

I'm wondering what caused the chips in the first place. What kind of pavers are these, and what kind of service did they see in that year and a half?

Just seems odd that the bottoms would be chipped up.

Are they a tumbled product?
I'm guessing anything under 10% surface area should be ok for pedestrian traffic, except if it's an edge missing.

If I had to guess, the chips were from the removal and subsequent delivery. When the town picked them up, they just used a bucket loader, dumped them into a truck which subsequently dumped them into my driveway.

Seven weekends later, I've picked the bricks out of the sand and sorted them. The chips themselves are relatively small (maybe gumball sized). the pavers themselves are the octagonal sort. I'm building a walkway and patio. I've got 7" of graded and compacted QP ready to accept the sand and bricks, and it sounds like there shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the responses!
