Lots of clover

Hi everyone. I'm a new member and a homeowner with a huge clover problem. I've been pulling it out of my lawn systematically, which is an effective yet majorly time consuming project. My question is this: is there a speedier remedy other than hand pulling other than using chemicals? I'll keep hand pulling if that is the only way, but winter is fast approaching here in S.D. and I don't want to deal with a huge clover field first thing in spring. Thanks.

I tip my hat to you for hand pulling........though I do think you may lose the war......unless you can devote endless time to it next season.

there just has to come a time when a chemical approach is needed.

If you are having a huge problem with clover, then i would suggest you send off a soil sample to get tested because rampant clover alot of times means there is a nitrogen deficiency in the soil. Get the soil right and the clover will go away

Where would you suggest to start looking for somwhere to send a soil sample? Would a local lawn service be a good spot? Also, would I add nitrogen just by fertilizing? Thanks alot for the help guys. I'm really starting to "dig" this lawn care stuff.

Take your soil sample to your county extension agent. They will send it off for testing for a very reasonable fee, maybe even free.

I'm with GLAN. Kill it off once and then keep up with the fertilization.

As was stated, clover produces its own nitrogen, so it will grow quite nicely in turf if the turf is short on nitrogen.
