My first time here, Hi guys:)
I just got a pool installed in my home and my family loves it. Only problem is, during the installation of the pool, the pool contractors ruined a good part of my yard in front of my house. As they would haul materials into the backyard, the equipment they needed to bring the mats in flattened the grass and for the most part the grass disappeared.
So my question is, do I have to remove the old flattened grass and put down topsoil and sod down to make it lvl again with the sidewalk or can you essentially put it right over the old grass? The only part that is dirt is the trail from the front to the back so for the most part its all grass except that part and it looks ugly. thx for reading and sorry for the long post

Why should you do it ??
The pool contractors screwed it up, call them up and tell them to fix it or have it fixed.

I agree with Dale. It should have been corrected by the
contractor as a professional courtesy.

I will call them tomorrow and find out if thats possible. Just in case I cant get them to do it, what would you all suggest I should do with my problem?
I will keep you posted as to whether or not they will do it.

Magician - you don't list where you're from. If the grass was only matted down and has turned brow, that may in part have to do with the time of year. Ruts are one thing, bent blades of grass another.
If it's just some browned out turf without ruts, give it a chance to come back. But either way, a discussion should have been had explaining to you what might happen to your turf during construction.

Unless there is a specific line item stipulating the pool contractor is to repair all undergound irrigation lines and destroyed grass to gain access, those repairs are typically the burden of the homeowner.
From a contractors perspective, if I can't see a line, or it cannot be marked to avoid it, I can't promise I won't hit it, and if I can't do that, I'm surely not paying to fix it. With construction access if it was not discussed during contract negotiations, it usually means I'm off the hook for making repairs.

its not just flattened grass, the level of the grass went down. basically the part of the grass that was not touched is normal, but the part they ran their machines over is now even with the sidewalk making it look uneven. The other areas that were used as a path was just basically covered with dirt. So imagine a yard thats all grass and normal and 1 path down the middle that was covered with dirt.
Will the grass just grow thru it or do i have to seed or Sod it?
PS. I live in texas about an hour away from dallas.

Just fill the ruts with soil, top dress around the ruts, seed it and and keep it watered and be done with it. In a few months that path will be just a memory.

True
But such equipment is heavy.......I would at least try to aleviate the compaction first.........Rototill or core aerate a few times
