Culvert pipe install

We will likely be tackling a culvert pipe install on a residential yard in the next few months. We've never done something quite like that before, wondering if there's anything special we need to consider.

The client will be getting approval from the local gov't, and I'll provide them with any necessary sketches/plans.

There's no curb and gutter in this sub, just drainage ditches at the front of every lot - installing culvert pipe, then filling in and seeding will make the yard look more like...a yard.

But is there any subsoil anchoring or anything like that we need to know how to do? Are there any tricks to placement?

Pipe size will likely be something like 12".

And your going to use RCP?, Corrugated steel pipe? Plastic?

Each has it's own method for install along with what kind of traffic it will receive. Most require a 6" gravel base with 1% slope, ends will need a flared end section.

Plastic is the easiest with RCP coming in last (only because of the weight) Steel the most likely used product is a bit of a pain because of the cutting and bolting.

Probably steel, as that is the norm around here. I think I've seen the couplers - just a cut sleeve with non-spiral corrugations, tightened via nuts and bolts.

6" gravel base beneath the pipe? Is that for water that gets under the pipe, so it doesn't move come freeze/thaw time?

The flared aprons appear easy enough - at least no harder than the couplers...

Ug. I can say w/ 100% certainty we won't be using that. Too much :flex: needed for that....

I like installing RCP 8' lengths, 3 men on site with skid loader and Mini-X can install a lot of pipe in a day that not too many landscapers want to touch.

I'll touch them....I just don't want to install them. :woot:
