I've had a client ask me for a bid for a shed. Something like a gardening shed. We're doing all kinds of other work for her, phased in over a few years. This shed is going to be something very simple, to serve as storage, like a gardening shed. It will go roughly where the 'X' is in the picture. As you can see, it will be sitting atop an existing deck. I'm a fish out of water here, but like the idea of new challenges. Are there some simple ideas anyone has about a design, or things to watch out for when building this shed on top of a deck?
Thanks in advance!

For example - It'd be nice to tie into the deck with fasteners of some kind, but decking rots, and if it does, removal of this thing would be a huge headache. Maybe freestanding is best, with a few toe nails. I'm giving some thought to something like a cabana, with one side open. I dunno...
Have you ever seen the Walpole woodworkers catalogue? They are fence/shed manufacturers and installers from Mass. I can't afford their merchandise, but their catalogue is a great source of ideas.

What will be stored in this space? Is it for year round service or just winter storage? It seems an unlikely place to store the lawn mower and such.
If it is for the cushions and umbrella and the like how about some sort of bench with closed storage underneath. A counter area with storage is also a useful option. A place for the BBQ and outdoor cooking /dining.
I also think the fence needs to be tamed down a bit with some planters and trellis work. A shed just doesn't do it for me in that area.
I don't see any other option than fastening to the deck. It wouldn't worry me.

site, I've never seen the Walpole catalog - I'll have to see about getting that, as this phase of the project won't happen for awhile.
Digin, I believe it will be for storage of garden tools and possibly some patio furniture.
She has told me several times that she does not want it to be anything fancy - just a simple shed to hold out water. Still, I think keeping it simple should still be able to look cool. It's funny you mention the softening of that deck area - she would also like to do that, but I've been so mentally blocked by that darn shed that I can't think of anything else in that area.
A shed? Why not some nice looking storage boxes that could double as seating? Long thin ones could hold umbrella and lawn tools, while shorter, wider ones could hold cushions and such. Add a couple of planter boxes, plus a nice railing to round out the idea.

That might be an option... :D
