I was told here about a year ago that zoysia grass spreads like weeds from the root and that it can be a pain to get rid of.

There's probably three different kinds of seed in my front yard and it looks pretty crappy. So sometime here in the near future I'd like to rip it all up and replant the entire front yard (which is pretty small).

A friend of mine just suggested tilling it under, grading the yard then replant, but if the zoysia grows like a weed I figured that it doesn't work that way.

So what's the best way to go about it?

Late July or August.......begin spraying with Roundup.....

When it is killed off.........rent a sod cutter.............cut it into strips and remove.....You don't have to cut to deep with the sod cutter.

That doesn't sound all that bad. How long does it take the Roundup to kill off the grass?

The key is to wait until it's out of dormancy and "begin" spraying with roundup (as Glan indicated). Multiple applications are necessary. At least three spaced 5 days apart.

think of pesticides like rat poison, if you put out rat poison and the rats don;t eat it, how much good does it do?

well the same thinking goes along with pesticides. If the plant is dormant it will not take in the poison.

If you have mowed recently, it is stressed and will not take in as well.

If it is a drought it will not take in as well.

If it is after a good rain, this is an excellent time to spray, the plants are unstressed and will soak up the poison like a bee likes sugar (assuming the plants are not in dormant season) you will have better results.

There are many variables with pesticides, but you will make your results better with these thoughts.

Thanks for the help. That's all very good info, just the kind that a diy'er like me needs. Cheers.

because there is no way possible to physically remove all parts. and being that zoysia is such an aggressive grass if you leave a minute amount it will come back.

so little and one rhizome you're doomed. I have never guaranteed a zoysia removal......often times the neighbors have it and over time it will return.

So let me ask all of you this. If I kill all the grass with the roundup why couldn't or shouldn't I just till the dead stuff under?

I understand its hearty grass, but if it's dead that shouldn't matter correct? Set me straight.

More chance of a sprig or 2 that haven't died coming back to haunt you. Better safe than sorry.

Is zoysia similar to bermuda grass?
