Stable base behind retaining wall for pavers

I want to put pavers on a patio behind my retaining wall. It is 3 1/2 feet high. I have no clay fill to tamp behind the wall to build a earth base before I put down the road crush ect. I was wondering if I could just fill the back of the retaining wall with all road crush and compact to build a stable enough base or will I need to fill with dirt (what type) first up to a certian level and the use the road crush. This area is the height of the wall about 15 feet long and 4 feet deep. Thanks in advance

Sorbate - the method you want to employ is the best one you can employ - using soils as backfill is just asking for problems. But using crushed stone, well compactred in lifts, is your best bet for a durable, long-lasting project.

Thanks guys, that is what I thought, but no one here had a clue. I don't mind using road crush, it is a lot easier to pack

Don't forget to include a pipe for drainage...

Of coarse. that is the first thing I will do plus gravel and then landscape fabric so nothing washes between my wall

For sure, it going to look like better homes and gardens when I'm done. I think it is going to take about two years. I'm hand shoveling everything, can't get equipment in the back yard.
