I just purchased a home in North Carolina. We have two of these trees in the front yard.
I need some help identifying what type of tree it is, how and when to prune it, and how to care for it.
Right now they look like they are in desparate need of a haircut, but I have no idea what to do.
Thanks in advance for you help.

Jerry - post a closeup of the foliage. Looks like a Moonglow Juniper, but can't be sure.

Here is a closeup of the foilage.
Hope this will help someone nail it down.
Thanks

Yep, Arizona Cypress. Looks like it's been sheared before as some varieties get much taller. Awesome color.

Several of my maintenance clients have these, over red stone beds. Such a #@$( to clean out after shearing.

Greensmith,
Buy a 15'x15' blue tarp, make a cut with scissors from the midpoint of the tarp's edge to the tarp's exact center and then pull the tarp beneath the tree at the trunk along the cut. The shearings will consolidate easily on the tarp for removal.
That should ease cleanup.
