laying pavers

newbie here so please be nice..I have a cement patio and was wondering if there is a problem with laying pavers right on the cement or do i need 1" of sand ,and what would happen if sand wasn't used..If sand is needed how do you do the edges and keep them level with the rest of the pavers?
