You've heard of the Longhorned Asian beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer----now there's a newly imported pest to add to the list. It hasn't been officially named yet but in Siberia where it came from it's referred to as a Euonymus Leaf Notcher Moth. I saw some samples of it tonight that our extension agent had collected locally today. This moth that looks a bit like a wasp with a fuzzy orange and black body feeds on the Japanese Euonymus (not Alata). I'll try to locate the web page with more info and pics if anyone is interested.

With the modern increase of world travel and globalization we are going to run into more and more imported pests and diseases. The Asian longhorned beetle is causing complete devastation of a 10 square block area in Toronto. Local plants have no defense against foreign pests. I think we will have to see much stricter inspection and regulation at our borders before we gain any sort of control over these types of problems. This dosn't only include plants, but local animals and human health as well which is shown by the recent SARS problem.
