I've been reading this forum religiously for the past year and a half or so and thought maybe it was time to contribute. Thanks to all the wily vets on this board with all the great advice. I'd rather learn your hard lessons than experience them myself.:)
Strangely enough, I couldn't find this chart on the american equivalent of this website, but maybe I didn't look closely enough. So you'll have to deal with CDN $.
This chart shows the initial cost of buying a pump, and then adds on the approximate electricity costs for that particular pump during the year. Not surprisingly, you get your money back in the long run for an initially expensive pump. Some of the Aquascapes stuff is an aboslute pig on electricity for the comparative amount of GPH. They also compare warranties on top of all this, showing that not only will the better pumps save you money in operating costs in the long run... they save you money because their warranties protect your investment.
Check it out, I think it's a useful tool in upselling. I give the clients a pond proposal for the cheaper, basic pump and allow for an optional upgrade to one of the better ones. When I show them the operating costs and warranties of a crappy pump, they say hello to German Engineering.
The pond planner section is also a useful tool for those wanting to learn how to design/build ponds and waterfalls.
