I have seen/read so many conflicting instructions about this. I was told and read from the very beginning that their should be no fines in your base material. 3/4"(-) w/no fines. Add fines and you then have crusher run. Crusher run is for laying paver base, so what gives fellas?

Without the fines your base material wouldn't compact well. Maybe your confusing the sand with the base material?

Possibly you are seeing instructions for permeable pavers vs. traditional pavers. Permeable base doesn't use fines, because water needs to drain through to the lowest level of the installation.

Whoever told you not to have fines in your base mtl was wrong. The only time you use clear gravel (no fines) is for permeable pavers and in the drainage zone of SRW systems. The minus sign after the gravel size means that there are particles from that size down to dust, which is fines. There isn't a such thing as 3/4"(-) w/no fines.

Sorry, I didn't clarify but I am speaking of an SRW only. When I order from my stone quarry and I specify 3/4 - no fines, I get 3/4 down to 1/4 or so.

Pavers, yes I get 3/4 crusher run for the base.

You use the same base material for your walls as your patio base. You want clean stone (no fines) for your drainage rock behind your wall.

Too high a % of fines in the base allows the possibility of the base moving under load when saturated.
